BrowseCast Google+ Page Created

With the new addition to Google+ of having branded pages. I decided to create one for BrowseCast.

If you’re a Google+ user, and better yet, a BrowseCast user ;-) then why not add BrowseCast to your Circles?

I will endeavour to put up useful information and updates on development as and when.

The BrowseCast Google+ page  is here - https://plus.google.com/b/103906208250029081417/

Thanks in advance for your interest.

BrowseCast 5.5 Now Available in the Android Market

…. Is this thing on? (tap tap tap)

It’s been some time since I posted here and produced some code. My apologies for this, I have a very busy personal/work life at the moment and haven’t had time to sit down and look at BrowseCast in a while.

I spent sometime over the last few days looking at the developer console on the Android Market to see what issues were being logged. It appears since removing Google Adview from the last version the application has been force closing a lot. I sincerely apologise for this and I hope I have rectified in this version.

I have basically re-added the GoogleAdview.jar back into the application buildpath. I haven’t actually added Ads back into the app. I’m hoping this fixes the issue.

In this version I have also removed the Change Log as all changes are logged in the Android Market.

I am aware there are other issues with this app and I hope to look into these as and when I can.

Again, my apologies to those that have been long term users and have uninstalled due to this issue. I will try and keep a closer eye on the developer console from now on and try and fix issues more timely.

Have a good week.

BrowseCast Issue

I am aware of an issue with BrowseCast that is causing a fair few force closes on some devices. I believe it is to do with the removal of the Ads.

I will look to resolve this at some point this week.

My apologies for the inconvenience caused to those effected.

Have  good week.

BrowseCast 5.4.2 Released

Good evening,

This release sees the use of a new Podcast XML that the BBC is exporting.

It carries many more Podcasts to choose from. There has been a slight format change in the XML in that Genres are named slightly differently. And unfortunately I am unable to filter out Genres without podcasts available.

This of course may change in future revisions of the Podcast XML and I will keep an eye out for any changes to the format.

I hope you enjoy this release.

BBC BrowseCast Update

There will be some updates to BBC BrowseCast being made over the next few days, namely;

1. The use of a new podcast xml file from the BBC

The new XML has a lot more content available and a slightly different layout for me to parse, but won’t take me long to develop for.

2. Change of application name

I have been advised to change the name of the application and remove the BBC part of it. So therefore the next release will see a rename to “BrowseCast”.

BBC BrowseCast 5.4 Released

Evening all,

I have just released version 5.4 into the Android Market.

No big changes in this version. Below is information on the new release;

  • Added support for Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) firmwares.
  • Fixed a force close when downloading new podcast xml whilst an orientation change was being made.

As noted on the Market I have an issue with some devices force closing when selecting a station with lots of podcasts available.

If this is happening to you, please get in touch so that I can try to get a handle on it.

Have a good evening.

BBC BrowseCast v5.3 Released

This is a big release for me. I have spent many many hours developing it. So to celebrate the 25k+ downloads of BBC BrowseCast here is Version 5.3.
New Features:

- By Station and By Genre views
These views now show podcast counts in the row. For By Station view, it will only show stations that have
podcasts available. Its surprising how many stations do not have podcasts.
NOTE: There is a slight computation involved in building these views and it will only need to do it once.
Subsequent loads will be quick unless BBC BrowseCast is destroyed by the Android OS.
If you find that it is stupid slow on your device, drop me a line.
- Added a new Radio Schedules view. You can now view station schedules using the new BBC Programmes
Old friends are back:
- 6Music is back on Listen Live.
Other:
I’ve been through just about every line of code and re-factored it. I have improved logic in various areas, such as downloading and connectivity scenarios.
I hope you like the new version, I look forward to hearing from you. If you haven’t yet rated or commented on the Market I would be really grateful if you could do so!
Have a good weekend.

BBC BrowseCast v3.4 Released – Listen Live Reloaded

So Listen Live is back, this time round though I have not given an option to use RealPlayer. Although the Listen Live feeds will work with RealPlayer. If you have RealPlayer installed your phone will offer which codec you want to play the feed with.

I have been using this slightly recoded version of BrowseCast for the last couple of days on and off and it seems pretty reliable. I’m not entirely sure why the BBC are still sending out these feeds, but hey, whose complaining?

Listen Live will work on select handsets. I have only been able to try it on a HTC Desire and it works really well. It takes about 10-20 seconds to get a feed on WiFi. I don’t live in a 3G area so was unable to test it over the cells.

I very much hope a lot of you will be able to use it, but please please please please please don’t leave crap comments / ratings on the Market if you are unable to get this working.

Until next time, have a good weekend.

Listen Live is dead… Long Live Listen Live!

In a strange turnaround I have been able to get Listen Live streams working pretty much flawlessly on my HTC Desire (firmware 2.2). I have not tried RealPlayer, but only the internal 3GGP codec that comes with the HTC handset.

Not every station is available, but most of the main ones are. Sadly, 6Music isn’t… (sobs)

Now the dilemma… Do I re-add it into BBC BrowseCast and face the torrent of crummy feedback/bad ratings on the Android Market the minute it doesn’t work on someone’s handset. Or, not bother with it at all…

I’m not sure I know, but I think I will leave the debug build on my phone and try it out for a while to see how reliable it is.
