Subscriber Update and Open Source Code Availability

As you know I had been working very hard on the last release of BBC BrowseCast v5.3. I’ve taken a bit of a break from coding to take stock and consider my next move.

I haven’t updated Subscriber for some time and I intend to continue its development shortly.

Prior to this though, I have decided to release the source code under the Apache 2.0 software license. This means that anyone can view the entire source code for the application or check out via SVN and have a play. Checking out is only read only so you won’t be able to make commits back to the repository.

The source code is available here – Subscriber on Google SVN and can be checked out read/only.

I plan to rewrite this application quite heavily once I get back to it. There is much to improve and streamline. I also want to get some extra features into it.

BBC BrowseCast redesign underway and BBC 5 Live Podcasts missing…

I’m currently redesigning the look of BBC BrowseCast, utilizing some new tricks I have learnt recently.

I aim to publish version 5.0 next week sometime. I hope you all like the new look of the app!

In other news, 5 Live podcasts are currently missing from the BBC podcasts listing. I noticed they had gone about a month or so ago. No rhythm or reason to it from what I can see. I’m just letting you know so that you know it isn’t a problem with the app.

Have a good weekend.

Android Coding Example: Authenticating with ClientLogin and using the Google Reader API

In this new article, written in the wake of my recent release of Subscriber to the Android Market. I demonstrate how to access the Google Reader API using Java.

I spent a long time working out how to do this in Java, being that I am an amateur programmer, and would of loved to of found a similar article a few months ago!

Here is the article: Android Coding Example: Authenticating with ClientLogin and using the Google Reader API

I hope you find it useful.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jonathan Headley, creator of JSOUP the HTML parser for Java.

Wot no posts

Sorry I haven’t posted much up recently. I have been busy developing my next application for the Android Market. It’s been interesting getting into something different and I’m looking forward to testing a stable build in the next month or so. I’ve also picked up a lot of new tricks and skills with Java and the Android SDK. It’s a great hobby that just sucks you in if you let it. Getting time for the hobby is an issue though! So much reading and playing around, so little time.

Add to this I have also been writing some further Android Development guides to post up. I have had some positive comments on my first post so I will continue putting them up. I hope you keep an eye out for them.

As for BBC BrowseCast, it has now had nearly 16,000 downloads with 8000+ installs in use. I can’t quite believe the figures for just under 4 months on release. I hope I have as much luck with my next application.

Until next time, have a good week.
